Welcome to 6th Grade
Use the seating chart on the board to find your seat :-)
Welcome to Room 202. My name is Mr. Olsen. I am one of three teachers on the Sixth Grade Math Team.
I have been a teacher for 22 years and love helping students learn new things.
I am married. My wife and I have four children -- two are in middle school.
My favorite color is blue. My favorite food is chocolate.
When I'm not teaching, I like being outdoors! Here are a few of the things I like to do outside: biking, swimming, camping, and watching my daughters play sports.
Let's take some time to learn about each other!
In a moment, I will pass out a sheet of paper with nine different squares on it. Your goal is to find nine DIFFERENT classmates who can do or who "match" a box.
When you find someone, be sure to introduce yourself and then neatly write your classmates name. During our debrief, I will be calling on students to share who they met.
Boosting Math. Youcubed. Jo Boaler. Growth Mindset
1. Everyone can learn math to high levels
2. It is really important that you believe in yourself. Keep going!
3. Struggle and mistakes are really important.
4. Speed is not important. What is important is to think deeply and visually, make connections
In our classroom, a lot of the thinking and learning happens in random groups of three at vertical whiteboards.
A. Only one marker per group. Share the marker (every few minutes or problem).
C B. It's okay to erase mistakes, but don't erase someone else's work without permission.
C. Three roles: Write | Talker | Observer
D. The person writing cannot write any of their own ideas.
E. Groups are responsible for the learning of every member of the group.
An ice cream shop has ten flavors of ice cream. How many different two-scoop ice cream cones can you make?
One answer when order matters (i.e. cv is different from vc)
One answer when order does not matter (i.e. cv is the same as vc)
Please take a moment to re-introduce yourselves.
Then share one thing you did over the weekend that was fun!
1. When I get stuck, how can I get help?
2. What do I do if I am absent?
3. What are the class rules?
To answer these questions, let's go to Google Classroom > Stream to look at our class' syllabus.
Procedures are things you will often need to do when you are in a class. Procedures tell students how to do the simple, everyday things -- so that everyone can do the routine stuff and stay focused on learning the new stuff.
Let's take the next seven minutes to review and discuss the first half of our class procedures -- so everyone knows how to accomplish the routine tasks.
A 3 x 3 x 3 cube is made up of 27 individual (small) cubes. If I dip it in pink paint, how many individual (small) cubes now have pink paint on 3 sides, 2 sides, 1 side, and 0 sides?
When you're working on the whiteboards in random groups, you want to be in the right column of our rubric.

Let's take the next seven minutes to review and discuss the second half of our class procedures -- so everyone knows how to accomplish the routine tasks.
1. What will we be learning?
2. Where is my textbook?
3. How do I find my assignments - CYUQs?
To answer these questions, let's go to Google Classroom > Stream to look at our class' syllabus.
As we work together to master the math standards, we will use a McGraw Hill math textbook.
To get to the online textbook, go to Clever > Click McGraw Hill
Today, I will give you your physical textbooks (V1 and V2). Please LEAVE THESE AT HOME.
Both the physical and online versions have examples. In addition, the online version contains tutoring videos, self-check quizzes, step-by-step solutions for selected problems, and a Multilingual eGlossary.
Google Classroom is the place to get information about our class.
I use Google Classroom to post class information, assignments and share links.
I do not use Google Classroom to collect work. I do not do any grading with Google Classroom. I do not message with Google Classroom.
Assignments that are due -- from any class -- show up in the To-Do list. If you want to remove them from your to-do-list, click Mark As Done. You can see all assignments (even the ones you've marked as done) by going to Google Classroom's Classwork Tab.
